Why is Samsung holding the Free the TV Challenge?

The challenge aims to celebrate the release of the Samsung TV Apps Software Development Kit (SDK) for our industry-leading line of interactive TVs; to generate great apps for our millions of customers; and to build new and lasting relationships between software developers and Samsung.

What are the criteria for selection of the finalists and eventual winner of the challenge?

Submissions will be judged on Visual Appeal, Quality of the Idea, and Functional Implementation of the idea.

Can more than one person work on an application and receive credit for it? And if the app wins a prize, will the prize money be split among the creators?

Yes more than one person may work on an app and receive credit for it. The prize will be awarded to the group and it will be up to the group to split the prize, as stated in the Official Rules.

I live outside of the United States. Can I enter?

No. Legal residents of the fifty (50) United States (including the District of Columbia) may enter provided they meet all of the requirements in the Official Rules.

We are an organization. Can we enter?

Yes. Corporations or organizations that are domiciled in the (50) United States (including the District of Columbia), and incorporated at the time of entry are eligible to compete. Organizations with 50 or more employees may compete for the Corporate Recognition Award which has no cash prize. Organizations with fewer than 50 employees may compete for all other prizes.

Can people enter more than once?

Yes. There is no limit to how many times an eligible person or organization may enter. And, an individual may join more than one team, corporation, or nonprofit organization.

Do the submitted apps have to be newly created for this competition, or can they be pre-existing applications ported to work on the Samsung TV Apps Software Development Kit (SDK)?

Submissions may be pre-existing applications provided they comply with all of the requirements outlined in the Official Rules, including that they must be built on the Samsung TV Apps SDK.

What are the key dates around the challenge?

The submission deadline is November 11, 2010, at 5:00 PM EST.
The public voting and judging panel will commence on or about November 22, 2010 at 12:00 PM EST and end December 16, 2010 at 5:00 PM EST. Winners will be announced on our about January 6, 2011.

Where can I find the Software Developer Kit for developing on the Samsung apps platform ?
  • The Software Developer Kit (SDK) can be downloaded from the Samsung Developer Forum in the SDK & Tools section under Apps Guide menu.
  • It is called the Samsung TV Apps SDK and is currently compatible only with Windows OS.

What is the Samsung Developer Forum ?
  • The Samsung Developer Forum(SDF) is a Forum for the Samsung TV Developers where all the resources related to building an app on the Samsung Apps platform can be found.
  • The SDF would possess tools from the SDK downloads to the documents and tutorials to build on the Samsung Apps platform.
  • In the SDF, each developer would be able to post their technical concerns with respect to the SDK and/or app development, where answers would be provided by the Samsung Engineering Team.
  • In the SDF, the developers would also have a chance to interact with fellow developers for information sharing and for exchanging ideas on the discussion board.
  • The SDF also has a space called the App Gallery where developers can evaluate other developers application and have their applications evaluated by others.
What are Samsung Apps?
  • Samsung Apps are web based applications running on an application engine installed in digital TVs and Blu-ray players connected to the Internet. This service makes it possible to run internet based applications on the TV and BDP. Viewing an application on this is very much like viewing web pages using a web browser on an ordinary PC.The browser used with Samsung Apps is the Maple 5.1 browser.

  • Maple stands for MArkup engine PLatform for Embedded Systems. It is a browser engine for CE devices.
  • An application when run on the MAPLE browser consists of HTML,CSS and JavaScript.
    • The HTML page shows structure of application.
    • The CSS file does the style of application.
    • The JavaScript controls the behavior of the application.

  • Most 2010 US TVs above 40” support samsung apps.
  • All 2010 Blu-ray players.
  • A developer can test the application on samsung apps supported TV and any 3D Blu-ray players.

What if I do not own a Samsung TV or a Samsung BDP?
  • Another option open for Samsung TV developers is to test their application in 4 Developer Test Centers open in NYC/LA/Dallas and Chicago.
  • In these Developer Test Centers (DTC), the developer can schedule time slots and test their apps on a real time Samsung apps enabled device.
